Walking into the gym and watching people lift heavy weights looks cool. But it’s also important to remember they didn’t get to that point overnight. It takes time and patience to learn how to lift and move weights using the correct form for any given exercise and then build upwards!
So…if you are new to strength training and want to learn how you can get to a point where you are lifting weights with confidence check out the following rules FitLab23’s head coach, Henry, has listed.
RULE #1
Research and read up on the accurate form and technique to execute the exercise and movement you want to perform. There are so many YouTube tutorial videos you can watch for free that teach you how to lift using correct form! Use these resources to learn, from the very start, how to move correctly and make sure you know the basic foundations so you are successful in achieving your goal!
RULE #2
Ask for help! Personal trainers and other experienced gym members are always happy to help and share their knowledge! This way you know you are doing an exercise correctly rather, than winging it, and in reality it’s completely wrong! Knowing someone has double-checked your form will give you more confidence to lift and to go for it!
RULE #3
Start with lighter weights! It may look cool to do a 50kg or 100kg bench press but don’t try jumping in the deep end straight away. Start off with a lighter weight and get used to moving with the correct form, then slowly build up the weight. You may be able to move heavier weights but if you aren’t used to the exercise or your form is all over the place, you will put yourself at risk of getting injured. Don’t ego trip!
Hope that helps! Leave us a comment to let us know how you get on.
